This is an area of Industrial Lighting few know much about. A common misconception is that these lights can survive an explosion. No, their purpose is to prevent explosions. And they do that by separating the light bulb and wires from the environment - a glowing hot tungsten filament is not conducive to a safe environment. Not so much. So, they all have heavy (and very cool glass globes). And big heavy heads to hold the globes, sockets, and wires. Explosion proof lighting is found in fuel processing plants, graineries, and abandoned munitions plants. Although still produced today (although for how long with advent of LED's), the vintage lights, with their beautiful curvy globes, are some of the coolest industrial lights on the planet, in my humble opinion... Here a few of my favorite lights.
