Thanks for showing the medal. I served on the USS Damato DD871 ( named for Tony Damato USMC) from 1968 -1972. Very fine ship.
I found out the item is a Yukon Heater Stove Model US M1950 draft deverter. It goes on top of the smoke pipe to cut down on down draft for gas fuels. The ropes are tied to the ten to support the pipe.
