I have a similar one about 17 inches who wears the helmet and used to hold a key with a tassel would that make any sense with the story?
I have a very similar doll with the helmet I'm glad to learn about the reason for my doll to have the helmet as I wasn't sure if it was accidentally swapped. I recall it once holding a key with a tass...

I love that the n is backwards. Seems English must be just as hard to translate from Chinese as it is to translate into Chinese.
I really thought this was a canton ware piece for sure.
