I used to collect Meershaum pipes, knives, & many other things, but in the 80's I had a party with invited guests whom I beleived to be all friends & friends of friends; and the next day I was missing a lot of higher end items and it broke my heart to think a friend would be so low; I am the type that would give you the shirt off my back if you need help, & I have given great pieces to friends just because I knew they loved it as much or more than I did, and I knew that God would lead me to another one or something better for the act of kindness. But when they stole from me, it hurt so bad I stopped collecting anything for myself & sold most of what I had, and started only hunting things to sell & or finding items for other people's collections.
I have been doing antiques since I was 8 years old. I sold my first antique to a dealer at the age of 12 to Clement Wallace on main st. Canandaigua, it was a 20" or so long cast iron touring car that I salvaged from the trash, once he handed me that money I was hooked, and I'm sure I got burnt, but as I said, I found it in the trash and I had a (my first ever own $20.00 bill) in my pocket & in the 60's that was alot of cash for anyone, let alone a 12 yr. old.
I have always had an eye for quality, in people & in treasures. It's the thrill of the hunt for me now. Darrell (Read more)
