I have inherited from my mother a table lamp that I believe was made by the Aladdin lamp company. I think it was a wedding gift to my mother and father in the mid-forties. It looks like the base is made of the Alacite glass that the company used for a time, specifically marketed as "Opalique" glass. The shade is long since gone, but I remember it consisted of vertical sections of some type of ivory-colored plastic and I believe I remember it being flocked. The base of my lamp is embossed with the leaves of a vine just in the ivory color. At the bottom of the base is an open scalloped edging which the lamp sits on.
I, of course, don't have the original shade and have a run-of the-mill contemporary shade on it which annoys me no end because it doesn't look at all like I remember the lamp looking when I was a child. I don't have much hope of finding the original or facsimile of the original because I think the material they were made of became brittle with time and the shades were thrown away.
So that's my current story. If you ever see one of those fluted shades, let me know! ha, ha! (Read more)
