The wood is walnut. Probably from a dining room set that included the famous Honderich "mini-max" table (3 leaves for expansion) with 6 chairs and a one or two chairs with arms.
To fhrjr2: Honderich manufactured cedar chests for the Canadian domestic market for almost 50 years quite successfully and, some were exported to the U.K.
