Beer and sports are inseparable companions. Baseball, football, hockey, and basketball fans have been aggressively marketed to by brewers for as long have people have enjoyed a bottle or can of beer. That's probably why so many collectors of vintage breweriana are drawn to signs, statues, steins, and tap handles that feature their favorite teams in the advertising.
Beyond the teams, there are, of course, the beer brands, the largest of which—Budweiser, and Blatz, Miller and Hamms, Pabst and Schlitz—have been closely associated with sports teams through all manner of sponsorships. But many collectors like to get local when it comes to vintage sports breweriana, pairing their favorite local teams with their favorite local beers, especially ones that have gone out of business.
For New York City collectors, Knickerbocker beer items are popular thanks to the brewery's ownership of the New York Yankees when Babe Ruth was in his prime, as well as its later sponsorship of the New York Giants baseball team before it moved to San Francisco. Fans of Pittsburgh teams such as the Steelers and Pirates look for brands such as Fort Pitt and Iron City. Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings fans look for labels and trays produced by Stroh's, while New England sports collectors go for items with the word Narragansett on them. Meanwhile, up in the Pacific Northwest, Olympia and Rainier reign supreme. Texas has Lone Star, of course, but also Pearl, and nothing says the Upper Midwest like a rusty can of Grain Belt.
