This is a 100% 50s piece of Italian ceramics. I love its stylized shape and the use of the Mondrian-like pattern that covers it all. In fact ceramics of the 50s seem to take a lot elements from the artistic avant-garde of the 20th Century and so we can find ceramics that remind us of Miró, Mondrian, Klee...
By the way, I guess I should have taken a picture of the interior of the vase which is turquoise blue. Pretty sophisticated ;)
This Gazelle vase was purchased at a souvenirs shop in front of chiesa di Santa Chiara in Assisi, Italy, in 1979. It seems that at that time you could buy vintage stuff at quite a nice price and, in fact, these were understood as old unsold stuff, hence their price.
I guess there is no way to find out who the designer is (if there’s any… my guess is that the ceramist who made it in the 1950s did a very trendy work but he/she probably wasn’t a designer at all, just a good ceramist), but at least on the base there is a signature: Ars Deruta, Made in Italy, 2463. So we know it comes from the Ars Deruta ceramics factory in Deruta , where they’ve been working ceramics for almost 800 years.
I’ve been doing a search online (both google and ebay) and I have to say, proudly, no piece can compare to this amazing one.
By the way, Carlos gets mad at me everytime I call this "the goat", replying very seriously "it is a gazelle!!!" LOL
it is very beautiful:)!
Thank Sean!
What time is it in Wisconsin? Shouldn't you be sleeping? :)
Maybe the address might be a further clue?

Maybe Walter Pellegrino can help?

Kevin , you really have lot of knowledge on the Italian pottery , You must have many years of experience of reading these markings.
Just the ability to look for clues. Many hands/eyes make light work.
sounds Great:)
Thanks ean, and thanks again Kev!
Your very welcome austro!!
Gorgeous Mondrian-inspired ceramic piece!
I laughed so hard with the goat/gazelle wars. Next time you have a tiff, call him goat boy.
This is stunning. My dream is to someday buy vintage / antique stuff in Europe :)
DrFluffy... I guess going to the right places, and Sean and Amber know a lot about it, you can buy amazing European vintage stuff in the States... much more convenient for you! ;)
Thanks Manikin , DrFluffy, Eye4Beauty, kerry10456, czechman, Amber and bobogal for your loves!!!
Also thanks to BigTex, aldo78 and Moonstone ;)
Wonderful abstract design with a colorful 'nod' to Piet Mondrian. - Rob
Thanks rniederman!!!
Thanks valentino97, bratjdd and geo26e for your loves!
Thanks for your loves, famatta!
Carlos is right. It's a gazelle, and a gracious one. I also start to develop a weakness for ceramics, but mostly of Scandinavian origin. I'll present some pieces here.
That is cool and what I was struck by is how much it looks like my MCM genie lamp in color and "tile effect"! I don't see a place here to attach a photo of my lamp, so I will post it to the finds. It was a find of mine a few years ago and still one of my favorite pieces.
Thanks EvolveTwo21! I am looking forward to seeing your MCM genie lamp!!!
Now that HAS character!!
Es bellísima, luce fantástica! So pretty! :)
Thanks antiquerose! ¡gracias Virginia! :) So glad you like this one!
it is a really great gazelle! another resource i've been using for Italian pottery is the Facebook Page on Italian Pottery. you can get a lot of feedback from people - including some of the Bitossi family members.
A unique and beautiful piece.
What a cool piece!
