Here is one of several new additions to my fusee collection. This English verge fusee was made by watchmaker Samuel Whichcote of London circa 1760. The balance has great movement and great sound when running. The movement is very ornate and is in extremely good condition. Gilt inner case with gilt metal outer case covered in horn and under painted with a foliate design. Under painted horn is a very thin piece of horn (e.g. bovine) that was almost translucent and was painted on the reverse side and then attached to the watch case with small pin like studs. The horn is in good condition which is rare for these old watches.

Incredible little machine over 250 years old!

Great maker: one of his clocks stands in the Cabinet anteroom of No 10 Downing Street. I think this is it here:

I must say that is one of the best pocket watches I have ever seen, I have had a few fusee watches in my time but I don't have them long due to I have a buyer for this type of watch. I used to see them 25 yrs ago ocassionally as my dad bought and sold them, but now very very rarely only specialist auctions. The condition of that watch is stunning it has everything going for it and a good maker to match. My dad used to tell me though when he first started buying and selling watches in the mid 60s, he used to find one or two a month as then sellers did not know what they were. Stunning pocket watch!
