Lately I’ve been buying a lot of ‘flats’ to go with my early cameras. Admittedly this was an unexpected find and IMO terrific. It is a CDV of an “Ice Breaking Steam Boat” model for a patent. The back of the CDV is stamped with the model’s name and notes it was patented on April 2, 1867 by J.B. Stoddard, 23 S. Bond St. Baltimore. It is obvious that Stoddard was proud of being granted a patent.

A quick search uncovered Stoddard's patent #63,577 for an Improved Ice-Boat. Stoddard writes: “This boat has a prow calculated to break and lift the ice in its path. The overhanging bows throw back the ice which raises on the beak, and the serrated edges of the wheels cut the cakes with which they come in contact so as to clear a passage the width of the vessel.”

Now to see if I can find the actual model that was photographed for the CDV.

That's an impressive find, I like looking at old patents, but have never seen a patent model nearly 150 years old!

What a fantastic machine, I wonder if one was ever built.

There's a good possibility that it never made it beyond this stage. If he couldn't afford to have one built or raise the capitol to do so the only other option would be to sell the patent. To sell the patent he would have to find someone that saw some potential in the design.
