Before and after pics. Just found this old sign in a junk shop and spent a few hours removing the yellow paint. Can't seem to find any like it on the web. Does anyone know where it would have been used or its value?

It could have been on an actual train engine. We have one from a different RR and it came of the side of the engine.

The Overland Route was a train route operated jointly by the Union Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad / Southern Pacific Railroad, between Council Bluffs, Iowa / Omaha, Nebraska, and San Francisco, California over the grade of the First Transcontinental Railroad (aka the "Pacific Railroad") which had been opened on May 10, 1869. Passenger trains that operated over the line included the Overland Flyer, later renamed the Overland Limited, which also included a connection to Chicago. Although the passenger rail service is no longer in operation, the Overland Route remains a common name for the line from California to Chicago, now owned entirely by the Union Pacific.

We can find the history, but would this sign have been on an engine, a train car, a building? It was painted with a very heavy yellow automotive paint, which makes us think maybe the train car or building were painted over yellow for some reason.

that many rivet holes prolly means it was probably fastened to steel.

It was probably fastened to a bridge...can't remember seeing any flat sheilds affixed to a train...those had some curvature to them. Wanna sell it?

Hello, just wondering if you sold this sign yet? If you're interested, email me back. Thanks.

I have seen signs like that sell at auction for $400 to $700. When it ends up on eBay it sells for much more. Nice sign!!! Nice find!!!!!

How did you get the yellow paint off?
    11. sandiegojake, 8 years ago
Given the yellow overpaint on a metal sign, it all but guarantees this was off a PFE Reefer. When the car came in for shopping, they would paint all, then redetail - likely as part of a rebuilt or perhaps when UP stopped usage of this "System" logo.

And not rivet holes. They used screws to affix it to one side of a PFE Wood Reefer.
