Rare circa 1900 "Viking Style" Art Nouveau table possibly from Sweden.
This fantastical table features a top and midsection with viking sailing and setting sun motif and symmetric design of dragon prows. Three whiplash curved legs demonstrate the marriage of traditional Art Nouveau form features with the more distinctive masculine Viking Style, which was an offshoot of "national romanticism" design popular in Scandinavia at the time. The table is constructed from wrought iron that has been blackened, bronzed and painted. Panel maker's mark of a star with a "M" and possibly "Eskilstuna." Dimensions: 28.75" (H).
stunning!!!
Wow!!!
Amazing cogito
Thanks to you both. Scandinavian Art Nouveau decorative pieces aside from pottery (e.g., Rostrand) are very hard to find. The movement was quite short lived in Norway, Sweden and Finland and the national romanticism styles generally did not gain acceptance outside of Scandinavia; the biggest exception being the Finnish Pavilion at the Paris 1900 Expo.
Its fabulous. The nicest table I've ever seen!
Those legs are to die for.
Love the table, I have a new post that shows a brooch that I think is also national romanticism, just incase you are interested to have a look. Where did you find your table?
