Two art deco vases manufactured at Brannam Pottery in Barnstaple (Devon) - judging from the style in the 1930's. Thomas Brannam owned two potteries in Devon in the mid-19th century, and his son, C.H. Brannam (1855-1937), took over in 1879. The pottery became a limited company in 1914. The pottery remained in the hands of the Brannam family until 1979 and closed in 2005.

The pottery was particularly famous for the so-called Barum Ware (named after the Roman name of the town), decorated with fish, animals and other organic shapes. Otherwise Brannam often used a green or blue glaze over a simple relief decoration (as here). The vases are dark brown on the inside.

Height: 12.5 cm. Mark: ["C.H. Bra]nnam (partly obscured by the glaze) Ltd., Barnstaple" and "Made in England". The 'Ltd.' indicates that the vases were made after 1914.

Very stylish. Love the glazes and simple shapes.

Yes, I love the colours, too - thanks racer and everybody else. There's a vase at the V&A Museum with the same type of green glaze: http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O151640/vase-c-h-brannam/
