    (756 items)

For the 400th posting I thought of this item .....

A couple of months back I visited a regular Saturday morning market here in Sydney. I arrived late. I meant to say "Hi", have a quick look around and then go shopping at the nearby supermarket. What I found was a market in disarray. Stall-holder regulars were in spots that they did not like. It was all caused by the local Council's desire to re-turf the area.

The upshot was that the regulars were slow to start the unpacking.

New stuff was being unloaded as I arrived at 10 am!

I found this frame on the table face down and waited for the dealer to arrive back from his car with another box of stuff. He told me the price, I happily paid and left for the supermarket.

There are no marks on the frame. Nothing on the pewter, nothing on the wood. Not even a country of origin. From research I know that this is not uncommon. You just have to look at it to know the designer, however. Well I thought I knew the designer as soon as I saw the turquoise roundels. The design at the top I knew as well. British Jugendstil, British Art Nouveau. The designer Archibald Knox.

Archibald Knox was born in the Isle of Man of Scottish parenthood. His designs were synonymous with British Art Nouveau and he is regarded as being a prominent influence in the Arts and Crafts movement. His Celtic designs and calligraphy are world famous and iconic in the Isle of Man. Today both his art work for Liberty & Co and his watercolours are highly sought after.

In England these days A. E. Williams are reproducing this design. But the reproductions are slightly different. The roundels are much larger. I believe that the A. E. Williams version is based on the clock of similar design with a pewter frame stamped: 0370. The roundels on that model are larger to contrast with the round clock face. But with a rectangular frame for photos Knox seems to have opted for these smaller turquoise highlights beneath the elongated rectangular space. Well that is my take on it.

Embossed in shallow relief with stylised flowers and leaves, stained beech back with easel support.

    9 2/3 in. (24.5 cm.) x 6 1/3. (16 cm.)
Designed by Archibald Knox, for Liberty & Co., circa 1902-1905.

The 150th Anniversary of the birth of Archibald Knox will be 9th April 2014.

Archibald Knox was born 9th April at Cronkbourne Village, Tromode, Isle of Man. He was educated at St. Barnabas Elementary School and at Douglas Grammar School. He remained a bachelor all his life. On the 22 Feb. while working on the Hall Caine Memorial (now at Maughold Cemetery, Isle of Man) he died at the family home, (70 Athol Street, Douglas Isle of Man) aged 69, from a heart attack. He was buried at New Braddan Cemetery, Isle of Man.

We were in Barcelona visiting a friend and his (new) partner :) We visited the Casa Batlló which is impressive -it's worth every cent you pay for the ticket, which isn't precisely cheap- but we also visited some buildings by Josep Maria Jujol in Sant Joan Despí (one of Barcelona's surrounding villages -but still withing the Barcelona bus and metro area), which is great to visit it. They offer this guided tours every last Sarurday of the month and they're great as you can see two great houses and their interiors: Can Negre and Torre de la Creu. I am sure you would love them!

      Congratulations on 400 Kevin.
Wonderful frame as are most of Knox's designs.
When we were at the IOM last year I "discovered" him as he is well celebrated there. He was a talented water colourist too.
The Manx have given him the ultimate accolade - a pub called The Archibald Knox!

      Many thanks RACER4FOUR!
I'm sure we might be hearing a bit more about him in the next few months.
His watercolours are amazing. Very Turner!

Hi vertio, I think that is the same date, same fair where I picked up a pair of Liberty Knox sugar & cream. It would have been the March fair. Potentially spooky cause you never (ever) see that stuff kicking around.
    50. vetraio50 vetraio50, 11 years ago
It was in Surry Hills Jewels. Spooky indeed! It's been years since I've seen any Knox at a market. Do you go to Wenty?
    51. Jewels1900 Jewels1900, 11 years ago
Yes, I go to Wenty. Wenty was actually where I got my Knox milk & sugar. They are the sleigh style. I haven't been to Surry Hills in years. What an amazing find.
    52. vetraio50 vetraio50, 11 years ago
You did well at Wenty too to get those items! I do the early bird but much goes earlier. I used to have a stall downstairs for about twelve months.
    53. Jewels1900 Jewels1900, 11 years ago
I never get there early. I have children to herd! I got these at about 1pm! Maybe they didn't get put out until later.
    54. vetraio50 vetraio50, 11 years ago
It happens! I certainly did not see them!
