I've bought this 1979 "Pancake" phone ("Dawn" model from Northern Telecom) in a second hand shop for 5 $. They said the previous owner gave it away because he changed his home decorations and it didn't fit anymore, and he said it was working perfectly. Unfortunatly, when I tried it at home, I found out that it does work perfectly, except that it doesn't ring.
Anyone has any idea of how I could repair it ? If I don't repair it, I'll still use it, but it would be better if it could ring !
I love old phone and for $5 even better!
What instructions did you use to hook up your phone wire to the correct terminals?
I believe your phone hookup has an initial for which color wire goes to which terminal (Y=Yellow, X=not used, G=Green, R=Red, B=Black) - it looks like you have the black wire going to the Y terminal, the yellow wire going to the G terminal, and the rest I can't see because you have a jumble of wire obsuring it.
I just opened it and didn't change anything, as I couldn't find any instructions for it.
What you can't see :
- L2 terminal has 3 wires : a grey one, a red one and an orange-red one.
- L1 terminal has also 3 wires : a grey one, a black one and a green one.
It looks like the prior owner had it wired for a two-line system. You are only concerned with the four colored wires that come from the main line Red, Green, Yellow, and Black. - For a one-line home you only need to use the Red and Green lines coming in from the jack - disconnect the black wire from the "Y" terminal and see if that works. - According to the schematic, the red incoming wire should go to L2 and the green incoming wire should go to L1 which you have correct. The yellow incoming wire goes to the "G" terminal (ground) which you also have correct. - Disconnect the black wire from the "Y" terminal and then see if it will ring for incoming calls.
I just tryed it, as you suggested : I diconnected the black wire from the "Y" terminal, and it didn't change anything... It still doesn't ring...
Thanks for the suggestion !
OK, sorry - wait til the other CW collector gets on - I believe he was once a telephone technician and maybe he can help you.
ttomtucker will give you the "low down" as agh stated.... Niceold rotary phone, Thanks for sharing
Plug it in anyway with another extension phone which rings so you will know when someone is calling!!
Try adjusting the bias spring on the ringer. Its the thin bare wire that sits in one of two grooves. Move it to the other groove and see if the phone rings.
I love it! What a wonderful design and color!
