Just an awesome set of sky blue Samsonite Silhouette luggage. In great shape, I was of course elated to find all 3 pieces at a garage sale!

Back in the late '70s my older siblings "found" a black suitcase/box like the one in front there. It has no lining inside, just bare plastic. Was it designed for something specific? Like toiletries or makeup? We had always just used it to store our Legos lol

It's a train case and was used for toiletries and/or cosmetics. I remember my Mom always took one on our yearly trip 1/2 way across the country to visit her family. I can still remember the smell of the inside of that thing! I think it is equally suited to hold Legos, though! LOL

I figured as much. We still have it for the nieces and nephews, and it still has our legos in it! Are these things valuable/collectible?

I think in sets they can be pretty collectible. I've had lots of inquiries from Europe, so maybe more collectible there? I know the whole vintage/retro thing is huge right now so pretty sure that that's the allure. I just think they are cool!

Fabulous set of suitcases. When we drive for overnights or vacation, vintage suitcases are the only thing I'll use. I get so many compliments on them. I love the feel of them and enjoy how durable they are.

My mom has the smaller blue one and still uses it for travel :)

You were lucky to find a complete set like that. In addition to great looks, style, design, durability, quality, etc. the hard luggage keep your clothes in better condition while traveling. Took a while, but I managed to assemble a mens set in oxford gray. The two and three suiters are great for carrying blazer/pants, suit, or tuxedo, and they do NOT get messed up. Although somewhat tall/wide, the slim profile makes them easy to carry. The dividers help separate things. The train case (later called beauty case) is really handy with the tray, almost like a tackle/tool box, and the dark gray one matches the mens cases. Shaving kit (and a little more) goes on the bottom, and the tray holds wallet, keys, reading glasses, cell phone, etc. I wouldn't recommend checking these for flying, as TSA does not allow you to lock cases, and these tend to pop open when tossed around. For train, car, or bus travel through, they're ideal, and your things don't arrive in a mushed up ball like when you use those soft cases.

Thanks for your comments everyone! Geekasaurus, cool ad! I love it! Apronthriftgirl & Mark-I think I'll plan a trip soon just so I can use them! :)

Definitely use them for taking a trip, that's what they're made for! Mine make even overnights feel kinda special. I always wrap shoes in plastic to protect the liner fabric. These cases make even an overnight seem special. You'll be the envy of your fellow travelers too.

That's a great ad - and I might even buy it! I have that very Samsonite Three-Suiter from 1964 (or thereabouts, that case was in production for at least 8-10 years) in Oxford Gray. The ad copy is right, it really does keep your suits (many of mine are the same vintage as the case!) in trim. Putting each one in a dry cleaner bag on the hanger helps. And before anyone makes the inevitable "Mad Men" comparison, I have had mine since long before Don Draper entered into the screenwriter's imagination.
      ENJOY!

How awesome ...I can see you jumping on a TAA flight and flying for 36 to London and being served food without being asked to pay extra because we're back in 1965.. How magnificent..
