This is one of the iconic Lötz vases, and also a design by the great Austrian designer Koloman Moser.
The design was commisioned by Bakalowits and was first produced by Meyr’s Neffe in 1900. Apparently at Bakalowits they were not really happy with the Meyr’s Neffe results, and two years later a new edition of this design was commissioned to Lötz.
There are three sizes registered in the Lötz archives: 14, 17 and 20 cm tall. All of them made according to Moser’s design. Other size variations (from milimeters to up to 1 cm.) are also considered as designed by Moser, and the variation isn’t but a natural one from an artisan process made glass.
At her famous book, Jitka Lnenickova shows the next paper patterns:
- one for a 14 cm tall vase.
- one for a 17 cm. tall vase.
- one without the “tropfen” and made exclusively with the Delphi décor. This one is not considered a Kolo Moser design but a variation made at the factory (as much as those with wavy edges).
Helmut Ricke, in his 1989 catalogue, shows the paper pattern for the 24 cm. tall version that apparently was the only one made for Bakalowits Söhne. The other sizes were distributed directly from Lötz and Lnenickova says at the K section (Reference to customers) that the 17 cm tall one was made for clients from France or Belgium (appears marked as “F-Markt”).
On the pic No.4 you can see the three paper patterns for this design (the first one appearing at Ricke's book and the other two at Lnenickova's).
There is also a detail from one of the "tropfen" in our vase. Carlos took this picture and on it you can see it's full of colour whereas in my pictures the tropfen appear almost clear...

WOW! This is the best! I love this art glass vase. Moser was a master of form. It is still modern today.
Thanks Fledermaus! No one better than you to appreciate the quality of form!
Yes, it's so absolutely modern, even today!
Hi Austro! It's that color that just gets to me.
How's the Irish recovery going?
Thanks Amber!!! The colour changes so much depending on the light! It's one of the most surprising things about it. The shape is apparently very simple but the little wavy movement on the body reflects the light in amazing ways!
Totally recovered now from the Dublin experience. But i want to go back! :)
beautiful, gorgeous colous and very very informative description...
does anyone know when Jitka Lnenickova's book on Tango is to be released....and does anyone know where I could get her books second hand? I hope this doesnt contravene the selling guideline rules of CW but I'm sure that those that feel it is will raise the alert...lol....just a struggling amateur hoping to learn more...:)
The only way I know to get the Lnenickova book, so far, is writing to the museum that publishes it. And it's not a cheap book! The volume II/1 is big and has 902 pages, with each page full of information!
There will be a lot of books published in this series... but no one knows when they will be out in the market. I wish the Tango one was for sale already! There will be one for authors too, another one for Commissioned pieces... decorations... It will be a thorugh study of Loetz whenever the whole work is fully published
Agh, so sorry to hear that Alfredo! This piece is stuning, how could do let it go? :(
