It's been a long time since I last posted any design by Nanny Still, one of my favourite glass designers.

Collecting Nanny Still's designs has become quite trendy in the last years, which has made prices increase too much. It really is sad to say, but this is one of the clearest cases of overvalued stuff in the hands of glass dealers and others who think they can make an amazing amount of money out of selling single pieces of glass... in many cases simple industrial glass, as it hapens with any Grapponia item reaching ridiculously high prices. Of course, it's been a long time since I bought my latest NS item. I love her designs, but I don't want to be the losing part of somebody else's schemes...

MAJAKKA is the Finnish word for lighthouse, and so this tall glas item looks like a lighthouse with an spreading glow of red light on top... This design came in tree sizes (standing 34, 44 and 54 cm. Tall -mine is the smallest one -34 cm. tall- and yet is quite impressive!). Its shade also came in three colours: clear, red and an orangish shade of yellow.

Nanny Still designed this in 1975, a time when Riihimäki Lasi was suffering from the petroleum crisis in 1973. In fact, blown glass production was discontinued in 1976.

I know you all like my pics and I've always told you they've gort some photoshop on them. So I've decided to add the original photo this time.

As you can see my backgrounds look always kind of gray... that's due to a poor lighting, so I use a couple of filters to make the background look whiter, add a little contrast and saturation... and as for the top of the pic, there's always a fading from white into transpaent and the silhouette the item, so I can emphasize the top part of the item...

I'm not rebessin, who makes amazing pics... I wish!!! But as a graphic designer (or ex-graphic designer) I've got the means to make mine look a bit better ;)

RACER and VIOLET: thanks so much for loving!!!

Thanks RACER, you'll make me blush :)

Well, I always tell the photos have a little photoshop, not much though! :LOL What i do is removing the grayish colour in the background due to a poor artificial lighting, make the colours a bit brighter and adding some contrast... I guess this is the time to show the final pic and the original. Just uploaded the pic!

Clearly it didn't need much tweaking!

Mine always need straightening, cropping, lightening, contrasting - sounds like a visit to the hair stylist!!

LOL, thanks RACER, you made me laugh! :) (well, not that I need much to start laughing, but it's soooo nice having someone making you laugh during breakfast! :) ).

I forgot about the cropping too... I like the square format for my pics. Remember these pics I am taking for cataloguing our collections... so I've got these files for room for data and pics. Square ones seem to fit better with my file design.

Finally, a glass piece! Yes, Nanny Still is trendy. I never saw this piece, though, it's really rare and very beautiful. I am asking myself why certain piecers are so sought after, and others, by other designers, which can be as beautiful are completely ignored. I think the market needs some strong names. It's important not to follow the hype!

      Thanks for your love, MIKE!!!

Yes, Cobalt, 20 days ago i shared two pieces of murano glass, but yes it's been a long time since i last shared a piece of glass other than Lötz or Bohemian... 3 months!!!

Don't worry, there's tons and tones of them still to be shared ;)

Well, there's something about Nanny Still's designs. When the director of the MAVA (Alcorcón Art Glass Museum) she was not at all impressed by Lütken's work but Still's really touched her... Appart from this, it's SO true that at some point she's been overvalued. I understand this about certain series that are quite impressive in design (Harlekiini for instance -although no matter how rare sellers say they are, they keep on coming out to the market-) but not about Grapponia, that was a popular item when produced and are thousands and thousands of them in the market...

A funny thing is that many designs by Tamara Aladin, which are as good or sometimes better than those of Nanny Still- are totally undervalued...

Thanks VLKMA!!! You hadn't seen this one yet. This one was the first one I ever saw. Once I got it they started having others at the same shop... in any case I still guess it's rare as it was only produced for about 1 year. it would be great finding the other two bigger ones!!!! (and knowing you, you'll probably find them ;) )

Nice item. Do you have Apollo candle-holders, i use to collect them long time ago?
Ruby one was my favorite. Nowadays i collect only 1800's glass and try to sell my Nanny Still and other items.
    23. austrohungaro austrohungaro, 10 years ago
      Thanks Joe!

Yes i have them. I've got the more classic shape in red and the striped cylinder in green. I know thre are many colour variants: olive green, clear, amber, dark blue... but due to my actual situation I can't afford getting more so I'm content just having these two :)

I'm sure you have some interesting Nanny Still and other Finnish glass items! I saw your harlekiini kermakko ja sokerikko set. I've just got the kermakko :(
