I have no idea what this tool is for, it's at least 30 years old and belonged to an elderly lady, so I wondered if it was something to do with sewing or knitting.
It's looks as if it might be made of brass, and has a sliding handle in the centre that opens and retracts the hooked prongs.
I hope someone knows what it is.

Was there a rope tied to the upper loop when you got it? Did you clean it up?

Exactly where I was going. Probably made by Neuman around 1910. Although I think this one was for stove pipe as opposed to the main flue.

We had one before on here, I was looking for it. It must have been over a year ago.

Yes I think you could be right about the stove pipe because it's smaller than the one on eBay. I should have mentioned that it measures 2inches diameter closed and goes up to 5 inches when fully open.
I think you both may have cracked it, thank you.

Nes - This design never really took off in the U.S.A. it was more common in Europe. We may be totally wrong but I have used a few of these long ago and far away.

Thank you both again, I can see it probably is a stove pipe cleaner now that you've pointed it out. It's great to finally know what it is and to find out a bit about it. I just could not think what it was for.

It's definitely a set up basket for a circular knitting machine, a couple of similar ones can be seen on these pages:

Yes, it does look like the circular knitting gadget for casting on socks etc. I noticed today that the hooked prongs were shaped and pointed at the ends (which would be needed for knitting.)

My 1st thought was stove pipe cleaner, but believe it is for knitting because it seems to be more on the delicate side.

It would be adjustable, too! What a great invention!

This is a cast-on basket for an antique circular sock knitting machine.
