    (1 item)

bought this on ebay about 4 years ago ... had to have it because my husband collects fire extinguishers and I collect coke stuff. I would love some information on it ... any information would be great ... origin etc ... and would also be interested in finding out it's value.

I posted much smaller images than the original and the details in not the best but the border is several bottles with the top bottle pouring into the lower ones.

it looks like each section in the middle is a year and the amount of gallons produced that year (just a guess) ranging from 1886 to 1900 with the largest date on the extinguisher being 1901 (guessing it was made in 1901)

again any help would be appreciated

Dang it! Ray beat me to this! :)

He's right, if anything, it's an original fire extinguisher, the brass plate was based on the back design of a 1901 stamp holder, the fake one is usually advertisied as a door push. It maybe worthless to any serious coke collector (like Ray) but I think the only way to make it worth any money is to remove the coke plate of of the fire extinguisher. And then try and find a original tag to the fire extinguisher. May I ask how much you paid?

I am crushed ... well not really I love it just the same. whoever did this then was very good there are no weld marks or anything. I would have to ask how much it was as it was a gift but I am going to guess it was more then a few bucks

Please check out my website: vintagefireextinguishers.com. I believe you may have a commemorative extinguisher commissioned by the Coca-Cola company and has significant value. Disney issued an extinguisher with an ornate label for the opening of Disneyland in 1955. Yours is a carbontetrachloride filled extinguisher--from the shape it appears to have been manufactured by Pyrene. These extinguishers were handed out to employees or as a promotional item. If you want to continue the conversation please contact me. Thanks--Doug.

Disagreement between experts, but I would go wth the Coke guys...........note the stratigically (SP) placed holes (look hard) in the 'label' would not be there for this type of use.........But it is nice to look at as a Fantasy Item......clean, polish and enjoy !

Ray--I'm "sticking to my guns"--this is a commemorative gift to employees or customers. Where would the label have come from bent to the perfect circumference and length of the extinguisher and attached (soldered professionally?) Also, if Coke didn't have the label manufactured, who else would go to the expense and trouble? I'll defer to the Coke experts in all things Coke--but I've restored about 600 of these carbontetrachloride extinguishers and labels similar to this are very rare , but they are out there. Thanks, Doug.

Doug, you ought to join and show us your collection of fire extinguishers...pretty impressive! My question is on any of the hand helds that you have, are there holes in the "label" for it to be used in an alternate application? (Reference Pop_abides' question).

Ray, have you seen these "fake" labels used on anything else or just by themselves?
    10. Savoychina1 Savoychina1, 14 years ago
Well, let me answer some of my own questions. I finally found a website that would allow close-ups and sure enough, some of the "labels" had four holes (in the corners) for use in other applications.

      http://www.vintagefe.com/home.html

One curious bit of information. Pyrene (if it is a Pyrene) did not make these hand helds until 1912. Why would they use a 1901 Coke label?

Look at the first entry then scroll down and read TIKI TOMMY's entry. Pretty much settles it for me.

What did I get myself into!! Savoychina1--the 1955 Disneyland commemorative label had retro Disney characters from silent cartoons embossed. Also, many of the manufacturers of these extinguishers applied the labels with a small tack weld at each of the four corners--could that be what you see? Thanks for the compliment on my work. Doug.

Hey Doug. I don't try to convince a person one way or the other. Just put the information,as much as I can find, out there and let them decide. Initially, I sided with you.

You are a fire extinguisher expert
You brought up the disney connection
You brought up the Pyrene connection
Pop_abides brought up the pre-drilled holes in the corners

The second website I list, shows one of the Disney "labels". Then there is a long article that debunks your claim of the Disney extinguisher being real. He is as convincing as our Loetz glass experts are about fake art glass. Did you read the article? Point to being fake.

The Pyrene extinguishers have two bands top and two bands, bottom. This one doesn't. Point to being fake.

The Pyrene extinguisher was begun in 1912. The coke label says 1901. Point to being fake.

Other manufacturers made extinguishers with pre-drilled labels. Neutral point. Neither proves or disproves. (That was Pop's issue, not mine.)

Over all the evidence indicates it is a fantasy item.

Still wish you would show off your wares !
