I completed this small antique trunk a couple of years ago and gave it to my Mother. I'm not sure of the age of this one or if it was even used by a child or not.
But, I really like the size of this one and all of the ornate hardware on it. I had to strip and reline the interior and tray (original tray) of this one as well. The buckles on the front are the original buckles that were on the trunk. Amazing that they survived at all!!
The lock cover plate is not original to this trunk. The lock was completely missing and it was the only thing I could come up with to cover the empty lock space.

    Thanks for looking!!

jscott0363, Nice trunks. Your "child's trunks" are in fact full size trunks. I am guessing they are between 26" and 30" long? Trunks from this time period 1860's to 1870's still made these smaller stagecoach size trunks. Prior to the 1870's a 30" long was the most common size and 32" long were the longest.

Really great work! Where did you get this lock cover plate? I've got a trunk that's missing this and didn't know how that I was going to fix it.

Thanks myoldkyhome!! I really don't remember where I got it. But, I have another that I'll give to you, if you like. Just let me know. My email address is at the bottom of my profile.

Really nice work. Is the interior fabric or wallpaper?
    14. jscott0363 jscott0363, 10 years ago
Thanks FatBoy64!! The interior is wall paper. Which is what was originally in the trunk. I just matched it up to the closest pattern I could find.
      Thanks again!!

      Thomas,
I'm not aware of any trunks manufactured with dividers in them during the 1800's period. Most had trays or lid compartments. The average cost for a trunk, during this period, would have cost anywhere between $4.00 to $12.00 depending on how elaborate the the trunk was. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for the comment, the love and for stopping by.

      Thomas,
The market on antique or vintage trunks varies from region to region. In this region, expect to pay anywhere between $250 and $500. I've seen them go for even higher numbers though. This is solely dependent on size, style and manufacturer.
You'll be hard pressed to find one with dividers. They were never manufactured with dividers, only trays and lid compartments. Hope this helps.

How about peach crates. I've seen them used for storing records and they look awesome!!

      Thomas,
Have a look at you local flea markets, peddlers malls, etc... I've just never seen a trunk with dividers in it. No antique or vintage trunk, that I've ever seen, was made with dividers. I'd say perhaps something newer, but the trunk business died out in the 1940's due to less expensive and easier to carry luggage came into the picture. Wish I could help you more, but I too am at a loss on what you could do. I'm certain that there is something out there that could be used for what you're wanting to create. Good luck!
