I found these at a motorcycle swap meet on Saturday and I have no idea what line of work these symbols were used in. I have over a dozen sets of numerical and alphabet stamps for marking metal, I have never seen any thing like this before. Any tradesmen out there that have seen these before? I checked the Matthews site and these are not a standard offering , these would have had to be custom made. Thanks for looking.

These were used by late dynasty Egyptians for marking engine numbers with hieroglyphics ! I hope you are well Larry, Your pal in pa.

I thought the same thing at first , but I showed these to an Egyptian engine builder I know and he did not recognize them as such. Come on up for tamales some day , my treat!

Interesting set. I have one set with 8 or 10 in it that are odd balls. Mine have a wooden base and top cover for storage. I bought them at a yard sale here in Florida for $2 because they were different. I had letters and numbers so figured for the price it was something fun. I have no use for any of them I just liked collecting them. Someday I will give them to one of my sons.

The Egyptian you asked, was he from upper Nile or lower Nile ? It makes a big difference. Tacos !

Actually he is from Niles, Ohio, Cortland area you know.

My oldest son gets along the Nile. You will know him by the patch on his arm if you get close enough. The patch says SNIPER, Tiger Div. Few get close enough to see it.

A search for matthews "safe-hed" brought up others like it. Now if I could get past the numbers and letters... At first I thought they were for leather craft with all the arrows, but other ideas include symbols related to circuit boards, trail systems/maps...too many others. I'll look for a bit longer, see if anything pops up. Just thought the "safe-hed" part might help you out.

Wonder if these are your guys (says they've been in business 160yrs). Maybe they can identify the symbols. http://www.matthewsmarking.com/product/indenting-systems/steel-stamps/ (Sorry about the previous double post...computer glitch)

I will try that company Monday and see if they will enlighten me with that information, thanks for your reply.

Thanks for the loves, I think I now have around 30 different number and letter stamps in all sorts of sizes plus these figure stamps! Collecting and hoarding, is there a difference?
