i found two exquisite things at Urban Ore today. This is one of them. it's the most beautiful piece of wood i've ever seen and touched! i'm serious. i think it is Japanese - like George Nakashima. I hope someone can tell me what it is...

Is it a wine bottle stand ??
You put the top in the hole & it balances :-)

      Wine bottle stand...

i guess so. it doesn't look all that great w/ a wine bottle in it though. it's also a lot prettier than the other ones i saw online. what kind of wood is it? it's extremely hard.

based on color my first guess is cocobolo:

thank you Trey and BHock45! it would be an awfully big shoe! i'm struck by the very strong hardness of this wood. it's like a rock.

there are heaps of coco in states but the trade of coco is restricted by CITES

I have to agree with it being a wine bottle holder. I would also agree with it most probably being cocobolo wood. Cocobolo is popular for items like this and also for knife handles cutlery handles etc. It isn't terribly expensive wood and tolerates use and cleaning very well.
