The latest addition to my hat trunk collection. This is a lady's hat trunk that was made in England by the A&NCSL (Army & Navy Cooperative Society Limited). I picked this one up at a real bargain!! It's patent leather with cowhide leather trim. Other than needing a really thorough cleaning, nothing more than conditioning was all that had to be done to this one.
This little jewel still has the persons' name, "Mrs. Legh of High Legh" stenciled on the top and her initials on both sides. The Legh family has resided in High Legh of East Hall, Cheshire, England, for many centuries.
Many travel stickers still survive on this one, though I've not been able to piece together the destinations on the stickers. Wouldn't you love to know the history behind the owner and all the places this one traveled to? I certainly would!!
The trunk was locked when I purchased it. So, the merchant had no clue of what the interior looked like, and neither did I. But, I took a chance and bought it anyway. In most cases, this type of hat trunks are usually crushed in some form or fashion. This one evidently managed to escape that type of abuse.
I found a key in my shop that unlocked the trunk. To my great surprise, all of the hat pin cushions are still intact and the interior turned out to be perfect! Nope, no million British pounds stashed inside!!! Though it's quite rare to find the hat pin cushions still intact in these hat trunks. And that was treasure enough for me.
The leather handle is perfect and is embossed with the brand name Cane and the serial numbers T 7427. The brass and copper are in beautiful condition. The leather securing straps are long gone. But, that's to be expected of a trunk this old.
This would be from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. Not too bad for a nearly 120 years old!
Thanks for looking!!
Scott
