I have two of these Spanish military images-- probably the same guy.

The image is a standard CDV and based on the style and construction it dates from the 1870s.

The photographer is impressed at the bottom of the image "W.W. Wood, Manila". Blank back.

Based on the Philippine photographer and era, I would suspect that the subject is Spanish and possibly part of the government/ military. Maybe even the Governor General?

Feel free to post any thoughts or ideas on the subject or research avenues.

Hi, scottvez, nice to see you.

From a quick search: A very interesting publication, with photos of a couple of dignitaries from this period, on the history of photography in the Phillipines. It begins in c. 1840 and has several references to W.W. Wood. In Spanish, but has the text in English starting on page 205.

Judging from the medals and decorations sizes and how they are worn I would guess this guy is more of an actor in costume than a real official of any kind. Looks like he is trying to be a Napoleon III .

I'd be shocked if he weren't a military or diplomatic official with a military title.

A quick search of photos of "governor-generals philippines " shows several with waist to shoulder arrangement of medals.

The hat may offer a better clue.

From what I could research it seems that it is a uniform from a coronel of the infantry of the Philippines (all the pictures are on forums army related). What it is a bit strange is that the uniform is not complete, he should wear a hat if it is a picture for a formal occasion. Hope it helped

Thanks for the information aissia! His hat is on the table.

Do you have a link to the forums you found?

      Thanks again.
