Here are pictures of a trunk my husband found years ago while he was living in an apartment in Boston, Mass. He restored it. We do not know anything about it. All I know is that he told me that it was a painted mess. Does anyone know anything about this trunk? Any info would be appreciated. Thank you!
Everybody needs a few--They are great for storage.
It is actually a bit hard to give you information on this particular trunk -- other than to say it is a lovely dome top trunk made around 1890 or so. It is a common style and form, and many manufacturers made this one or similar to it... and without a maker's label there are not enough distinguishing marks to figure out who made it. Many of these trunk makers bought common parts from other companies... as would be the case for this trunk. Yours is in very good condition... hope this helped a bit.
Thanks trunkman,
That was a tremendous help! I love to know the history of things. We use it for storage, but my husband admits that he did ruin it by fixing it up. I just like the look of it. I see you have many amazing trunks!! They are beautiful!! Thanks for your knowledge and expertise.
You are welcome -- and the trunk is in very nice restored shape -- no "ruining" on this -- tell you husband that he is welcome to "ruin" one of my trunks if this is how he does it! I love the look feel and history of these old trunks... thanks for the compliment.
Haha!! You are too funny! Thank you so much for the compliment... I will be sure to relay it to him! I am sure he will be thrilled - especially coming from someone who is an expert at restoring these old trunks.
I have a similar trunk. How did your husband clean it to get the tin to shine?

Thanks to all for the loves!! :)
Hi Trunked! I am sorry I didn't get back to your question. I hadn't seen my husband long enough to ask him how it got it to shine. It was painted over when he found the trunk. He said that he scraped it and put some sort of lacquer on it. He did it over 30 years ago, so he said he really doesn't remember exactly how he did it. Sorry I couldn't be more help. I am sure trunkman or someone else on this site knows exactly how to do it right. My husband just "winged" it!
