I am just trying to learn more about this treasure I have been carrying around for years. It is domed and has horizontal wood slats across the top. The date stamp on the corner piece is Oct 23 77. Unfortunately, when I purchased this so many years ago, the side handles were missing and the front lock does not work but I have loved the piece and hope to one day have it brought back to it's original state. Thank you for any information you might be able to offer me.
Yeah, it seems like the handles are always gone and the locks never work but it looks like a pretty nice looking trunk. There is a lot of info online if you go hunting.
Thanks, I have researched quite a bit but its hard finding pieces where the top slats are horizontal instead of vertical....I will keep looking though. Thanks much!
This type of trunk is known as a barrel stave trunk and was quit popular in the late
1800s.(There are many on this site.) This one is on the higher end of the quality spectrum ,(even though its not leather covered) I.E. metal under the cast slat hardware,All the extra nail work Double nail work on the ends , Diamond pattern nail work for decoration etc. ,I would venture to say that her insides were pretty special too when brand new.All this combined says to me that it was a better quality manufacturer.Well worth restoring ,Thanks for the post.
Hey
I have the same trunk and i never knew it had a stamp on the shoulder,
But on my lock it has Patd MAR 69 APRIL 77 and the strange thing my too has OCT 77 on the shoulder
Very interesting that you have the same trunk with the same date. The locks on mine have no stamps. I bought it at a garage sale in Orlando Florida around the age of 16. Been lugging it around a lttle over 40 years now.
Those date stamps were patent dates of the hardware and were used for many years well after the dates inscribed. The hardware on most trunks were bought from a supplier so many makers had the same hardware on their trunks...
Thank you so much for the additional information. I am enjoying learning about my trunk from everyone who has provided new facts.
