According to wiki - The Kodak Six-16 folding camera cost $40 when new and was produced from 1932-1936
The 6-16 Brownie Junior box camera was from 1934-1942 and the original price was $2.75 - pretty sure that's the one you have.
Thank you aghcollect. :)
Hi all ... I have all Kodak consumer catalogues from 1886 through 1941 and dug in to check out the Six-16. I don’t collect these later box cameras but the deco face Brownies are interesting and this piqued my curiosity.
In regards to the model posted here, this is a Six-16 as opposed to it being a “Junior.” The difference being is that the Junior has a ‘fixed focus’ lens compared to the Six-16 which is an adjustable focus model. Additionally, Junior models are marked “Junior” below the lens.
The Six-16 Brownie appears in catalogues from 1933 to 1940. In 1941 the “Special” version was introduced (not this camera). A well regarded Kodak book by Brian Coe (former Curator of the Kodak Museum in Harrow, England), says it was introduced in March 1933 and discontinued April 1941. While the camera could have been available and manufactured into 1941, the 1941 catalogue does not include the Six-16 Brownie. This probably indicates that Kodak already decided to stop making the Six-16 before the 1941 catalogue was published.
Anyhow, the Six-16 shoots 8 exposures of 2½ x 4¼ inch pictures on No.616 film. When first introduced in 1933, the price was $3.50. Oddly the price briefly popped up to $4.00 in July 1937 and eventually dropped down to $3.25 in 1940.
In excellent condition they are striking cameras.
rniederman thank you for the extra information. I could not get the camera open, any idea how to open the camera without damaging it?
To open the camera, pull out the winding key as far as it will go. Sometimes you need to turn it slightly to pull out all the way. Then look for a small knob that holds the front of the strap and pull it out. You should then be able to pull out the front (separate it from the back). - Rob
Thank you Rob will give it a try.
