At the monthly Collector's Fair here in Sydney last Sunday I saw this vase downstairs and I was quite smitten. It was not expensive and so I decided to take a punt. It had a few elements that struck me as being both unusual and attractive.

The dealer who sold it to me had a sticker on it saying 'Krosno'. I asked him why that attribution and he replied that he had seen a similar vase linked to Krosno. The Krosno factory dates back to 1923 : Krosnienskie Huty Szkla (Krosno Glass Factory) „KROSNO” S.A. is the largest glass manufacturer in Poland.

I thought Czech ...... but maybe that's my fixation and it has Japanese feel to it too: the gold leaf reminds me of Japanese work on fans ... the shape and decoration too, I suppose, has a Japanese look. But no, the dealer was correct. It is Polish.

MILOMAX SPOLKA AKCYJNA is the name of the firm, it seems.
    MILOMAX S A
    ul. Lwowska 6, Krosno
    38-400 Krosno

Address: Lotników 4a, 38-400 Krosno, Poland

The shape is like a pillow. The centre is divided by a wide vertical gold band. One side of each face is decorated in an enamel cross hatching that gives a textile look. Over that there is enamel leaf and vine in contrasting gold and black enamel and yet another band of horizontal gold leaf. On the side this pattern is reversed.

The left side is clear and you see through to the rear face. There is gold enamel vine across the clear surface.

I believed it to be Deco... and thought it might be post War. But it is in fact post 2006 when the firm was begun.

Bevelled edges to the top. I think the piece has been moulded into this cushion shape that has eight surface panels.

The base is slightly concave, not a pontil but the edges have been ground to flat.

I believe this vase is one of their TECHNIKI LACZONE or combination technique pieces. It is on a form coded WAZONY 04380_0280_AA-0001.

    No signature.

    H: 19 cm or 7.5"
    W: 22 cm or 8.6"

IVONNE, KAREN and DECOVOO solved this mystery for me.

This is a beautiful vase in art deco style to me and perhaps from the era,but it doesn't look like anything from Krosno I 've seen so far.If it had a Krosno sticker it might be a part of a short export production line...Don't know...The IDing seems doubtful to me.
    2. vetraio50 vetraio50, 9 years ago
Many thanks IVONNE for your opinion. I was hoping you might have access to earlier Polish designs. It looks nothing like the Krosno I remember from the the post war period seen here in Australia. But then we only saw export stuff here.

Many thanks to you too CORMORAN !!!!

My oldest Krosno Catalogue comes from 1949.They were still producing pre war designs and the stuff was completely different.
Hope someone will be more helpful :-)

Hmmm. Some of the decor does give off a Japanese vibe (I have a teapot that has that sort of decor), but not entirely. Karen may have something to say about it since this is her area. Certainly interesting. Sometimes it's good to take a flyer, you never know! :)

I can't say this is not Japanese, I just don't think it is. The decoration is definitely in a Japanese style, but to me it is a Western interpretation of a Japanese look, and not how the Japanese would do it.
I have not seen any Japanese glass yet that uses a shape like this, with definite sides and added front and back. However in some ways it does look a bit Japanese. Lots of thick clear glass, flame finished, great design balance.
Sorry I can't help. Whatever it is, it is wonderful, and I should have bought it when I saw it Kevin!!

Wow Kevin, I love everything about this... the way the gold contrasts against the red, how the leaves pop against the red, the clear sides and the shape... beautiful piece! BTW, can you tell I love it!!!

Hi.vetraio,I'm still thinking about the vase and must admit my first association was Walther, because of the disc shape ,(they are very popular and frequent here ) but their surface never is smooth.Today I've come across this one - it's painted.Maybe you should go in this direction?

      WOMAR
      Wojciech Jankowski - WO
      and
      Marcin Waszkiewicz - MAR

"Womar Glass Inc. was established in 2006 as a result of combining the experience of three people from three different areas of business. The founders, Renata Misztal, Wojciech Jankowski and Marcin Waszkiewicz bring over thirty years of experience in retail, wholesale and manufacturing. The Poland based manufacturing plant employs more than one thousand people. For over fifteen years Womar Glass has manufactured hand-made fine glassware for many well known glass retailers. They want to sell directly to "Mom and Pop" privately owned shops, enabling them to compete with large retailers. By buying directly from Womar Glass, small retailers increase their profits and cut out the middle man at the same time."
      http://www.wayfair.com/Womar-Glass-C482871.html#

I've had a look at the company and Wojciech Jankowski is involved in a number of firms and products as well as glass. The American arm of the firm is Marcin Waszkiewicz who imports glass through Germany - a transportation link to Poland and a company in Krosno called Milomax Spolka Akcyjna.

I had a look at the site selling their glass. It is quite beautiful, particularly the enamelled ones.

Hi,vetraio,I also thought about your vase when I saw DecoVoo post.I'm glad that the mystery is finally solved.
BTW, techniki laczone = combination techniques.
    41. vetraio50 vetraio50, 9 years ago
Many thanks IVONNE and KAREN !!!!

By the way IVONNE do you think that Techniki Laczone describes my vase?
    42. Ivonne Ivonne, 9 years ago
If your vase represents more than just enamelling eg.sandblasting, cutting or etching you can say it is made by using techniki laczone
