    Not sure possibly WWI. ? German? Can anyone identify this helmet and it history? It was passed down from a family member who spent many years in Germany at the end of WWII.

      That'a a German enlisted man's infantry style pickelhaube (spiked helmet) from WWI. Looks like a mix of brass trim and a grey metal 1915 style spike, If so then it's likely together from a couple helmets. Anyway the front plate, chinstrap etc are missing. The red & blue paint was added later. The blue/red roundel is reminiscent of a wartime UK marking. Here's an example I posted of a complete helmet:
