I recently purchased this nice and unusual late 19th century loose tintype.

The image most likely dates from the 1880s- 90s time period.

The men are sharing a drink at the table with a large bottle left between them. To me the real "Star of the show" is the large size stoneware jug at their feet.

Close ups show some nice details on the stoneware-- I really like the large cork in the top.

What an unusual photo! Taking photos was an unusual event for most people then I belive and who would want to portrait themselves like this then? Maybe a pubowner or a brewer with a client? It must mean something when the focuspoint is the big bottle is put ín the centre of the photo like that. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting thoughts elisa... unfortunately, the exact circumstances have been lost and we are left to speculate....

I know and that's a shame. But sometimes by speculating about the context it can give you a lead that brings you forward. Maybe a brewery/beer museum could tell from the shape of the jug what country/time etc. Good luck in your search for more unique photos.

      Thanks-- appreciate the thoughts!

I do know the image is American and the jug is typical of 19th stoneware.

One more thing, you could also post this under "brewerian" category here on CW and ask if anyone can give you more information. Just a thought.

Ok, didn't see your answer. Ok.

Thanks much-- I do appreciate all of your suggestions and feedback on the image.

If you like antique images-- please take a look at my other items. I have hundreds more on here-- numerous examples are open to speculation!
