I found 2 old porcelain Old King Beer signs in an old barn that I recently purchased. Wondering about the history. I can't find much. Only that the brewery was open from 1933 to 1946 in Oklahoma
Any information is appreciated.
Old King Beer was made by the Southwestern Brewing Corporation located at 2 West 3rd Street, Oklahoma City, OK. They started brewing a year after the repeal of prohibition in 1934. The Southwestern Brewing Corporation was in business from 1934 - 1946, then changed names to the Peter Fox Brewing Co. which lasted from 1946-1948. The brewery closed in 1948.
Old King Beer was one of the breweries flagship beers along with Old King Pilsner Winter Beer, Black Dallas Beer, Golden Vienna Beer, Old King New Blend Extra Dry, Gold Seal Beer, and Old King Bock
Your sign looks to be an outdoor display sign that would have been hung outside a bar above the door to the establishment. Usually signs like these would have had spotlights on them when hung or neon tubing outlining the sign.
Very cool sign! Did you only find the two flat signs? Was there a hanging hook frame with the sign or a box with a neon transformer in it? If your ever interested in selling one or both of them please let me know.
Thanks
I found these two signs without anything else
Both are double sided porcelain but they have a lot of dirt and some rust.
I will clean them tonight and repost.
Thanks for the history.
I didn't know about Southwest Brewing Company but I did find an article about Peter Fox
One sign is in better condition than the other.
I purchased a property with several old barns and these signs were buried in the debri.
I found few other signs, Magnolia Petroleum and Champolin Gasoline
Not what I will do with them yet but it's been fun researching the history.
Do you have any idea of worth?
cool find, lets see the other signs!
Value would be tough on those signs, if they are common or rare I'm not sure as I only mostly collect and deal in East Coast Breweriana. The condition is a bit rough on the one, although I'd need to see both sides and both signs; they could be restored by a professional porcelain sign restoration person too. Post some more pics of the other one as well as both sides of each sign cleaned up.
Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the late reply.
I found several signs and need to clean them up. Two more large Mobil sings, a Magnola petroleum and a Champolin sign - all porcelain two sides.
But also found hundreds of old canning jars that I'm sortin through now.
I will clean up the signs and repost soon for some help on the history.
Thanks again
Yes!!! Let's see the other signs. Welcome to CW:)
I like to trade as I have doubles of a lot of signs:)
Very cool signs, I hope you get around to posting more pics of them....
