This is a very nice example of a crystal Opal. This has the most amazing colours of reds, blues and greens. The size of the Opal is 22mm X 16mm X 3-4mm in width. The diamonds are round brilliants. The total length is about 1 1/2 in length. This was a total surprise today at the local flea. I would love to know what kind of an Opal this is.
    Thanks for looking

I would say that is a lightening ridge opal as well! You have a beauty there...especially for a flea find. I'm jealous!

Mandini31, I did not get this piece cheap. Lol. There are jewelry dealers there and you do pay. And yes I am lucky. Thank you for your comment. I will do further research. Many thanks.

Hi Moonstonelover, only just noticed this, must be quite a flea market to have pieces like this! Great play of colour right across a large size stone with lots of reds, and with the bonus of already being made up into a diamond pendant.

I would say this is dark opal, also known as semi-black opal, probably from Lightning Ridge. Looks to be about N7 body tone, you can see the body tone chart here: https://www.opalauctions.com/learn/technical-opal-information/black-opal-brightness-and-body-tone-guide

Doesn't look to be crystal opal to me but hard to tell from the pics. If it's crystal opal it will be translucent or semi-transparent, so if you hold it in front of a bright light you'll be able to clearly see the light on the other side shining through it.

The weight will be around 8 or 9 carats, it's a lovely piece.

Hi Olebodie, Virgin Valley is the only place in USA where black opal is found, and I believe it is very, very rare.

However true black opal is regularly found in Lightning Ridge Australia with a jet black body tone (N1). I'll get some pieces out of the vault and post them in the next few days.

Found some pics of black opal rings and posted first one here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/190966

      What a beautiful piece!
This could be also a slightly darker type of white opal. The opal has no completely transparent/translucent base (as a crystal opal would have), it doesn't have a potch back (as black and semi black opals usually have), it shows a rather milky base, just like white opals.
Also among white opal there are such with gem quality. And yours just sparks exactly like that. Look for example here: http://blackopaldirect.com/product/opal-pairs/10-00-ct-white-opal-set/
And no Harlequin pattern here :-(. But it looks like a stunning confetti pattern as far as one can judge from the pics.

Very Pretty!...I recently purchased a ring that I think is Opal with dark blue,greens..and then when light is behind it...the color disappears...and then its clear dark pink/reddish color

this is just the most beautiful Lightning Ridge opal!! top quality! my uncle who is a developer in Alexandra Headlands on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia has a small table made up of repeated cross-sections of an opal vein from Lightning Ridge. it's pretty spectacular.
