I'm an amateur furniture restorer and came across a very interesting trunk. This was a gift from an antique dealer on the west coast of Finland to the then sitting US Ambassador to Finland, the trunk is in overall very good condition. It's been difficult to find anything that looks the same as this trunk, the only trunks I've seen that closely resemble this are Scandinavian Wedding Trunks, if anyone recognizes this or could help point me in the right direction to learn more about this trunk I would really appreciate it, I'm not going to touch this thing until I can learn more about it. Thanks!
Try researching Scandinavian or Norwegian (and of course Finnish) dowry chests to find similar examples. These are usually referred to as chests, blanket chest or boxes -- wedding chests as well. Certainly fits the style and age as scrolled on the front and if you have provenance as you state then a good bet that that's the origin. Many as you have most probably discovered have dome tops -- but of course not all. This one is a very beautiful example. Thanks for the post and Welcome to Collectors Weekly!
Will do, thank you!
