I was just handed these as I was typing my last post. They were also in with deceased grandmother’s sewing things.
During World War II, the US Government created the Office of Price Administration (OPA) . Its job was overseeing war rationing. Most people have heard of the ration books and stamps, and a few have been posted here. But what happens when you should have change coming back on your rations? The OPM minted these little fiber tokens so merchants could give exact change.
Both sides look the same. These were issued between 1942 and 1945. Some rationed items used red tokens while other rationed items required blue tokens.
Interesting never heard of that before. I can imagine them being tucked away at the end of the war and never seeing light of day again until you got them just now.
You are probably right about that elanski.
