This cast iron waffle iron was designed for use with a wood stove. The low base gives away that this was made for a wood stove. Gas stove waffle irons had a much higher base. On the top of this waffle iron is embossed 6 x 8. This means it is designed for stove eyes from 6" to 8" I believe.
This is a 2 piece set with a separate base and burner. I have been working on removing the rust from the iron and getting greased up. Cast iron likes getting oiled up with appropriate food lubricants as cast iron breathes and absorbs it.

What a great piece of cookery history. Where are you going to build your wood stove? :-) :-)

Thank you very much Efesgirl. I think I had best build it outside.

Fortapache, I just came across this old post and wanted to comment and Love it.
I think I have this same one with the diamond pattern.
I have a small collection of 6-8 cast iron waffle makers - all with a different pattern inside.
When I lived in homes with gas stoves, I loved making waffles on them, especially when I had company.
Most people have never experienced using these irons and my guests would get a kick out of them!

Since my house is total electric now, I packed them away. I’ve considered hauling out a small propane camp stove just so I can have a flame to use a couple of my favorite ones again.

It was a treat to see your post!

It’s perfectly fine to use yours on your gas stove...just leave your burner grate in place and set the waffle maker on it just as you would a skillet. Heat one side, flip the griddle to heat the other side, pour in batter, wait for steaming to stop, take a peak to see if it’s done.

My favorite ones have that same height of the base and they are just fine on a gas stove burner with grate in place.

Watchsearcher it make take me a few waffles to get this down but as I can make waffles I think it can be done. I also have an electric waffle maker that is almost 100 years old.
