Penny Picture apparatus are uncommon studio cameras equipped with modified backs to make multiple inexpensive pictures on a single plate. This Gennert Penny Picture is a majestic 5 x 7 inch format polished mahogany multiplying view camera with a Cummins Photo Stock Petzval formula lens.

A photographer's choice of lenses, and their ability to exploit lens properties, often made the difference between an average image and an artistic masterpiece. First introduced in 1840, the Petzval design was an innovative approach to create a fast flat-field lens suitable for portrait work.

The Cummins portrait lens on this Gennert Penny Picture throws a fine, flat-field image with a graceful fall-off to the edges that was greatly cherished by 19th century portraitists as well as contemporary practitioners. Surprisingly, image fall-off is very desirable because it draws a viewer's attention to the center of the portrait by softening the background.

The Gennert’s shifting back is a marvelous construction of polished mahogany panels and brass hardware. Brass guides allow the back to shift horizontally and vertically and be locked in place as needed.

Hi mcheconi ... there was a time I shot pictures with many cameras in my collection. But I'm too busy these days to keep playing with the equipment. However I posted an image here on CW that I shot with my 1904 Century No.9 (8 x 10 inch) studio camera. You can see it here: http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/124682-female-figure-study-shot-with-a-1904-stu
