I bought 2 of these Batik artworks yesterday, and rather enjoy looking at the little 4.5"x 6" pieces of art in their 11x13" matted frames. Here's one of them close up, and the other depicts 2 huts on stilts with 2 villagers walking along in a forested setting. I've done not bad researching the history of Madras Batik, but am thoroughly stuck on the signatures which both seem to say Eng, or maybe it's the initials Cng. It's just a strange looking first letter to me, and am only reassured by the other painting the last letter is a g. I've been able to research the most notable artists of the 60's/70's in Madras (Now Chennai) and they all have Indian names. I'm new to this art form and wouldn't have taken these on if it weren't for the provenance on the back. Thanks for looking and hoping for that aha moment one day with these.
Thanks mikelv85 and Caperkid.
Thanks aura, blunderbuss2, sklo42, Myfavorite Treasures, and racer4four. I just did a few more hours of Batiking online and could not come up with any artists info unfortunately. As well, there's not much for Madras Batik at auction. One things for certain, the Madras art movement in the 60's is held in high regard by India and there are several museums displaying works from this village know as Cholamandal where the Madras art movement took place. I just e-mailed the Gov. museum in Chennai to see if the could give me any info on this item. It's a shot in the dark, but I have to try.
