Oh my god you have a real treasure there!!!! I don't think you'll find too much on that any sign like that on the internet since they are so rare. What you have there is called a glass lens sign; definitely pre-prohibition era and from a highly collectible brewery. If I had to put a date on it I'd say turn of the century around the 1900's era.
I love the graphics on it as well as the gold leaf lettering! I imagine if you took that to a professional restoration person they could restore it to it's former glory. I'd love to see some more pics of it. Could you post more or maybe send some to me off my beer collectible website? To view my website google search the term "brewaf" and you shouldn't have any trouble finding me.
Very nice piece!
Its pre prohibition. From around 1900-1912 or so. Can you send a picture of the backside to oldbeer@gmail.com? The other ones I've seen are wood.
What you have in what is called a Convex Reverse Glass Sign that dates to the early 1900's from the Jacob Leinenkugel's Brewery of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. These would have been placed on the outside of saloon's across west-central Wisconsin to advertise the companies beer brand. There are original pictures dating to the early 1900's of this sign appearing on a bar that is 120 miles from the brewery, providing proof that Leinenkugel's beer was distributed a great distance by horse drawn delivery methods.
The process by which this sign would have been made include hand painted graphics on the reverse (backside) of the glass that incorporated glue chipping and gold leafing to create the graphics.

Inspired by your find, here is a story that I just wrote on the Leinenkugel Beer Reverse on Convex Glass sign and the fascinating history behind how these kinds of treasured breweriana signs were originally made.
Anyone who knows me to be intensely passionate about both Jacob Leinenkugel Brewery and Reverse on Glass signs, so this was a fun article to research and document so that the history behind this sign can be known and shared with others.
