Usually the day after Volunteer's of America's end of the month sale things are pretty well cleaned out....but new things begin to appear a few days later. I've always found some of the best paintings on those days. This beautiful impressionist landscape is a great example. The sunset creating the "After Glow" in the sky is rendered in pastel oranges, pinks and lavender. In contrast, the landscape's lush dark greens are punctuated with little dashes of red and yellow wild flowers. I'm not too sure what the buildings are... greenhouses maybe?? The back shows a lot of age. I have never seen iron joiners in the corners of a stretcher before. So I'm fairly certain this is a 19th century canvas. There are some scuffs and scratches in the paint but no holes or dents in the canvas. The title and signature are written on the canvas in thick pencil or charcoal. While the printed title is easy to read the long hand signature is not. So for now the artist is a mystery. A museum piece...well maybe but most likely just a talented amateur . -Mike-

Oh, Mike what a beautiful painting, I like the impressionist style, and the backing tell a story of age, agree with you for the dating, late nineteenth very early twenties century, is this canvas nail to the stretcher??

Thanks so much Alan. It is a beauty :) ...yes the canvas is tacked to the frame not stapled so that is another sign of age. It was falling out of the frame with just a couple of loose nails so I went to Lowe's and bought some 3/8" conduit clamps. They're thin and bendable and make great fasteners from the frame to the stretcher. :)
