I inherited this from a family members attic. It is leather and tin(?) in a scallop pattern although it looks like the metal was gold at one time. The clasps are marked with a 2. I've been unable to find any makers mark it has a large hand signature on the bottom(the black picture), but I am unable to make out what it says.
Can anyone tell me anything about it? And also the best way to clean it up without causing any damage? Thank you in advance if anyone can be of help.

Your trunk is a metal covered (also called "fancy metal") barrel top trunk. It is from 1878 to the early 1880's. The only leather on it are the handles. The trunk is tin and iron. The Gold was a Gold tinted shellac on top of the tinned metal, and is quite fragile, so don't rub it too much. A mild detergent will work to clean the dust off. The #2 on the latches only means that they were larger than a #1 (the smallest), and smaller than a #5 (the largest). The # 2 was the most common for a trunk that size. Very nice trunk with the original interior. No makers label, so we don't know who made it.
      Hope this helps,
      Jim

I feel rather silly. I took a closer look and the black portion I assumed was leather is in fact tin. I'm excited to clean it up. Thank so much for your help.

My sister found one like yours in the attic. She was cleaning out. It has the same drawers and picture you have
