    Hello CW friends!!
I recently found this mid-1800's tooled leather valise. This was made around the 1850 to 1860 period. It's covered in leather and has some really beautiful tooling on all sides, primarily the top side. What stood out to me the most, besides the fine tooling, is that the leather carry handles are still intact and still in premium condition. These are usually long gone when I find this type of trunk.

This one was in extremely poor condition when I found it. I was able to clean the leather with glycerin saddle soap and a tremendous amount of leather conditioning. A good polishing and it was back in business once again.

The interior is still in really nice condition and I'll show that in my next post.

Thanks for stopping to have a look.

    Scott

Hey Scott ! I left this in the airport in LEX KY when I left. Would luv to get it back next trip. That was in Gate B-4 about 1862.

Oh yeah BB2, I sort of figured this was yours:) I'll take it back to lost and found and perhaps the next time you're stagecoach passes thru Lexington, I'll have the porter bring it out to you:)

hmm reminds me of sherlock holmes. Jus a quick one if you dont mind, where do you store all your trunks? Do they require any special environment?

      fleafinder,
Believe it or not, I have them in stacks of five each in different rooms around the house. That's why I especially like the smaller trunks. Thanks for the wonderful comment, the love and for stopping in. Always truly appreciated!!!

      myoldkyhome,
You're very kind!!! I clean with Stubben Glycerin Saddle Soap, then I use Leather Honey and finally an application of SofSole Mink Oil. I've used that combination for years and it hasn't failed me yet.
Thanks for the love and for stopping by. Always a pleasure to see you drop in. Much appreciated!!!

Hi js -- I have a question for you. I am about to pick up a leather covered trunk that is in poor condition -- the leather is a bit brittle I think (have not actually seen it yet)and quite aged. To move forward on it I will first of all saddle soap it to clean it (good first step?)-- what kind of leather conditioner do you use -- what brand? Do I treat it once with the conditioner or a bunch of times? Usually I have just slathered mink oil on leather but i want to treat this one properly. Any input would be welcomed. Thanks
      T-man

      T-man,
You're correct on the saddle soap (I like Stubben Glycerin Saddle soap). For the conditioning, my favorite is Leather Restoration Conditioner and can be purchased from preservation-solutions.com. I've had excellent results from this product. It may take several applications, but the results are well worth the wait.

Good luck and I'm anxious to see your finished product!
