This book, a very nice edition of it put out by publishers in 1900, is both insightful and amusing. According to it, gorillas hunt you down and bite your fingers off one by one as snakes hang by their tails in waiting to eat you.
It has wood engravings and coloured plates.
The map shows my city, which isn't a surprise considering we were the "Lumber Queen of the World", where most of Michigan's logs ended up in our mills after their river-trip (Muskegon Lake's bottom-- all saw dust).
Now we're not on a simple map like this. By the early 1900s, we were switching over to tourism because we cut down all the trees. By the depression, we were just another town.
Over all, an interesting book. It had a decent price already, but they gave me a discount because they like me. The book goes all over the world, looking at places, events, people, and advancements.
"What hath God wrought?" is quite appropriate for the first coloured page. They included it as the first telegraphed message, but perhaps they also included it to show what became the Grandest Century in the World's History.
It's a great addition. I rarely add books to my collection anymore. They either have to be really old or really interesting. This is in the latter category.
