Hello. I am trying to find more information about these recently acquired cups and saucers. The word WEDGWOOD is imprinted under a couple of the saucers and each piece also has an urn with the word Wedgwood written underneath in gold. It also has the lower case letter and numbers y556 written on the bottom of each piece. the y is written in red and the number is scratched in or imprinted. There is also 4 red dots arranged in a diamond shape. I can't see any other letters. I believe the urn with Wedgwood written underneath date it around the 1870's. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

When I first saw your cup and saucer I thought it looked pretty modern, but the backstamp suggests it's much earlier. There isn't England marked on it, so I would think they are around the date you mentioned. Very pretty.

Your teacup dates from 1900 and onward. The mark lacks the three stars under the urn that would date it to pre-1900.

Thank you hoth for your replies. I had already read that article Efesgirl and I think it means without the stars is from around 1878 - 1900 and with stars 1900 onwards. Found another reference confirming this. It wasn't very clear and had to reread it to make sense of it. Really intrigued about the letter and numbers and the dots in the shape of a diamond. Thanks again.

LOL I see what you mean - I also went back and reread it and you're right. Whoever put up that page wasn't very clear.

They are beautiful, and in amazing condition for their age! Did you inherit them ?

Thank you maryh1956. I was lucky enough to buy them for what I felt was a more than reasonable price. I loved the look of them and their condition, maker and age certainly helped seal the deal.
