I picked up this cooler from an online auction site. I believe it's a Coca Cola Westinghouse Jr, though the inside lid looks like a repop?
I'm only interested in cleaning it up, not restoring it (at least not repainting it... I'll need to change a couple gaskets and maybe the inside?). Will use it as a display piece and to hold board games.
Anybody have any resources on the best way to get these looking good again? I'm guessing certain things work well for rust, some for cleaning, others for polishing. While I'm not going to try to turn around and sell it, I don't want to do anything to hurt the value.
Thanks in advance for your help!
nice you are correct it's a westinghouse junior, the inside lid is original but just repainted in silver like half of the inner tank which is in galvanized metal
it's only missing the cap catcher on the side ( original one are impossible to find )
it's important for me that the cooler has still the original paint, it's a good point
I have the exact same cooler in my collection, nice find
Thanks for the info. From a value standpoint, would I be better off replacing the inside tank or just trying to de-rust it?
Any good recommendations on how to best clean it up and getting it looking it's best without repainting it? Maybe there's a book or website about such things.
my neighbor has one and wants to sell it to me. It's in the same condition as yours except the rust. He is asking $1200, is that a fair price? Wherever I look it's between 800 - 1000. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks
I am probably not the best person to ask since I'm new to this, but I only paid 220 for mine. Granted it has rust it doesn't seem like it should be that much cheaper than what your neighbor is offering unless your neighbors price is high. Or maybe I just got a really good deal. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
I paid mine here in belgium with original paint 230 € the equivalent of 255 $ those can be found in this range of price
