A few weeks ago I headed north on an op shop hunt on my Opal card and did about eight shops before I found anything. It was this little plaque by Frances Jones. I was really chuffed because I had been researching Frances Jones on Trove and had found some interesting detail about her not known before ... well not recently anyhow.
Born in Roseville, Sydney in 1923, Frances Jones studied at the East Sydney Technical College and the Julian Ashton School. A naive painter, she exhibited in the eastern states. She died in 1999.
Her parents Marie and Bert were both artistic as were her three siblings Paul, Bernard and Roberta. "Bert Osborne Jones, was an amateur painter who exhibited occasionally, so this atmosphere carried over into the lives of our children."
"Frances and Roberta did tiles. Roberta, whose tiles, of more abstract design, decorate some of Sydney's luxury homes and a wall in the Chevron Hilton Hotel. Roberta has been studying in London"
"Mrs. Marie Jones, whose hand-made period dolls have been exhibited in Harrods, the well-known London store."
"Bernard, designs and makes furniture. One of his miniature pieces was shown at Sydney's Exhibition of Rare and Beautiful Things last year."
Paul was a watercolourist of great note and was celebrated for his paintings of camelias.
But Frances interested me especially because she had worked at two potteries here in Sydney of great note. She was employed at the Martin Boyd factory and I believe she was responsible for some of the early floral and fruit pieces for Guy Boyd. In 1954 she was one of a number of potters who left Martin Boyd Pottery and entered the business of Etta Easton.
In the 1960's she had her own studio, the Frances Jones Studio in James St., Woollahra. This studio became a gallery where Frances exhibited not only her own work but that of other artists.
All your hunting paid off!
This is really lovely Vetraio, and really interesting history about her as well!!

Hi TASSIEDEVIL !!! $2.50 is all it is for us seniors .... that day I did eight shops and came home on the ferry from Manly. It was a real hoot. Mind you a few days later I went down with a flu for five weeks !!!
That sounds like an excellent day out, topped off by finding your little plaque!!
5 weeks with the flu........that is just nasty Vetraio!!! Hope you are better now. :-))
Trove is a trove, but it takes your sort of effort to find information like this. It's interesting that in Australia we had these families that all seemed to be in thearts together. Fantastic background here.
These look like flannel flowers - a great plate.

Sweet! Such a lovely piece of pottery. I also want to thank you Vetraio50, for using the word "chuffed," a word I have never known in my 50 plus years. I love language, so this is so much fun, in addition to learning about Frances Jones' pottery!
A beautiful piece!
