Ouch!!! Help me!! Well that's what I thought I heard when I saw this little gem. I have only begun to strip the paint off and good news -- redeemable!
Now what's odd about this trunk is the size -- full size leather trunk which I have yet to come across. I still have work to do on it like polish the leather which is all intact including the handles. Will show the after when completed. Took about an hour each section to get it to this point.
Thanks for the leather dye tip -- came out pretty good -- leather has lost most of its finish but all things considered I am happy with the results.

That's the first leather trunk that I've ever seen anyone paint. You're a better man than I for being able to get all that paint off. I can't wait to see it after you finish it. Looking really great already!
Thanks so much js -- the paint has preserved the leather wonderfully -- and of course devalued the trunk considerably so a great deal for me and fun to work on. Who paints over leather like this???
That lock looks like an English made lock. I've seen these used a lot on W.W. Winship trunks. Does it have a crown logo on the lock? I also love all of that wonderful tooling in the leather.
I ran out of fine steel wool so could not clean it up yet -- no logo on it - but a solid piece of brass -- high quality.
js -- I was thinking of using black shoe polish to even out the black colour -- do you have any other recommendations as to how to even out the colour on this?
I'm surprised you could get the paint off without damaging the leather.
I have done this once before and I was equally surprised that it can be done - a little damage but can be covered over easily enough. Thanks for the visit Spiritbear.

I'd use a high quality black leather dye and then apply several coats of mink oil over a several day period. Once you done that you can give it good buffing to bring out the sheen of the leather. I think you'll be pleased with the results. I try to stay away from using shoe polish unless absolutely necessary. If you use shoe polish, the carnauba wax, in the shoe polish, tends to prevent mink oil or leather conditioner from absorbing into the leather. Beautiful trunk and great looking lock.

Hey trunkman how you doing, great trunk, if you recall the jenny lind I posted a while back was painted black. After cleaning off the black paint, the leather was in very good shape but blotchy, I did exactly what scotty suggested, I used dark brown Fiebing's leather dye it also comes in black, let it dry for several days before using a leather conditioner.
Thanks Greendog - did just that and it turned out great! Will post results in a couple of days.
Js -- the lock has a crown with v r stamped on it.
How did you take the paint off?
Furniture stripper, scrapper and fine steel wool. Took some finish off the leather but the dye did a great job of evening it out - thanks for asking Celine!

Great job, so far. I would never have guessed that you could use furniture stripper on leather. I'll be interested in seeing the final result.

Thanks myoldkyhome -- I tried it once before with good results -- the alternative of course was just taking off the leather which would have been easy. Hard to take off great leather from a trunk so there was nothing much to lose in the attempt.
Very nice job on the (Pepto) paint removal, It is not something I would of attempted. As far as the lock goes, it was imported from Great Britain. During the time that trunk was manufactured (around the 1850's) we were still importing a great deal of items from all over the world, especially from Great Britain. Many items, such as locks, we were not yet prolific at manufacturing, so it was easier, and cheaper to get them from over the pond. The VR stands for Victoria Regina, or the official title of the reigning queen. So, any item with that marking would date from 1837 to 1876, the time of her reign. Great job!

Trunkman, I agree with the others, a great job removing the pepto paint! A very nice leather trunk and great to see another one saved! I've removed paint from a few trunks before but sure don't enjoy doing it...

It really came out fantastic looking!! Fab job on this one! There is a leather topcoat that I use that's made by Mohawk. I use it after staining and conditioning and it gives a really nice sheen and leaves a nice feel and look to the leather. I think you'll be pleased. Nice job my friend!!
