    Sold for Thunderbird brooch......

As misdescribed, price was good for me!

An Art Deco Egyptian revival silver and plique à jour enamel would have attracted more bids :-D

Update: big thanks to Ivan who identified the mark for Cairo, 1931/1932!

Wingspan is 6cm (2.5/16"), marked 800 and an indistinct mark on the needle: letter ?, a bar, W, a bar, E (or F?).

That looks about as much like a Thunderbird as I do....!!!

      It's superb, too.....

It was made in Cairo, Egypt, fineness .800 (mark on the left).``Cat mark`` (in the middle) was used until 1946. Date letter (right) is ``F`` for 1931/1932 (replaced with Arabic numerals in 1940).

Btw. It`s Egyptian scarab with spread wings, a symbol of extended protection.

      Lol Bonnie! Thank you!

Ivan! Huge thanks for solving this mystery :-)
I thought it was maker's mark, and didn't expect a hallmark on the needle!

Ah Kyra, how funny is that.....this is gorgeous!!! Well done for spotting!!!

``800`` was struck before enameling, the only place for full marks was obviously the needle, otherwise would crack the enamel. Plique à jour is difficult to make - one can ruin several peaces to achieve perfect results. So, the maker could not risk to have it assayed, duty paid and then ruin the piece.

Celiene, Lois, dear Manikin, Phil, Vetraio and Judy, thank you so much for your gorgeous and lovely comments :-D I was indeed lucky to spot it !

Ivan, thank you for the explanation, the hallmark being so long, that makes sense!

IVAN49 - would you please look at this brooch and comment on the strange setting of the stone. You have great knowledge! Would be much appreciated.

Interesting, I've never seen a plique piece like this with Egyptian marks. It's so like the earlier German pieces style wise but I guess the enamel colours are quite different.
    17. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Jewels1900, neither do I! But it is obvious so much tourists went to Egypt then, they had to make some fine souvenir jewellery!

The enamel colors are more pure primary, and surface more glass like than on German pieces.
I think you missed Bluboi's Egyptian bracelets:

Cannot help with the stone based on the image.
Egyptian silver with old marks (cat an Latin date letters) is not very common. They have mastered enameling, cannot recall if this quality can be seen today.
