Hello fellow collectors!!
While on vacation this past week, I was able to spend a lot of time in my shop working on and completing this English made Victorian era round top wicker trunk. It's covered in a coated burlap material to protect it and to make it waterproof as well. It makes for a light weight trunk. It was made around the 1890’s period.
Had I of known what I was up against, I would have never bought or began restoration of this little beauty. There is a lot of leather on this one, more than I usually see on this type of trunk. The leather lock protector flap was inside the trunk and very dry rotted as were the strap keepers. I fabricated new strap keepers and a new lock protector flap, all from the identical design that was on this trunk.
The interior, of this one, is all there and quite beautiful, if I must say so myself. I’ll post that in my next post.
I don’t know what kind of thread was used when the trunk maker stitched this one together (I'm thinking wool thread), but there were very few stitches remaining (Perhaps moths got to the thread). So, I had to re-stitch nearly every single seam on this one. I have about 50 hours wrapped up in stitching alone and 1 ½ spools of leather stitching thread (25 yards each).
This trunk was originally stitched together with black thread and, after much thought, I decided to go back with a natural color thread and stain over it with medium brown stain. I thought it looked a bit better than the black stitches.
But, once the stitching was complete and the trunk got a good cleaning, as well as the interior, I was glad to be finished and glad I did it! It may be the last wicker trunk that I restore though:)
The lock is an English made "Secure Lever" lock. But, the studs that secure the skids, to the bottom of this trunk, have "Paris" engraved into them.
I’ll show the interior in my next post.
Anyway, thanks so very much for stopping to have a look. Always very sincerely appreciated!!

Beautiful job Scott!
Scott your passion has brought you to a new level of expertise -- maybe you feel its through the back door or still just a hobby -- but I and others here would easily describe your work as "expert" -- and I admire the work of your hands and obviously your heart on pieces like this. This is beautiful restoration work through and through... congrats bro...
Marvin,

Thanks!! No, but my shop is getting full. But, that's OK, the Christmas shoppers have already been dropping by and I've unloaded a few already!
Drill,
Thanks Pal!! I do truly appreciate the awesome comment! You guys are way too kind here. I just think I did a mediocre job on this one. But, my wife and friends say that I'm a perfectionist and a bit too meticulous. But, I'm still not too sure about that one yet. Thanks again!!!
Thanks very much for the appreciations and for stopping by
