WE came across this real cool old trunk and don't know anything about regarding age or origin. Would anyone be able to shed some light on this? Thanks

American made, fancy metal (at least that's how most trunk catalogs referred to them) covered, cross slat (slats on top running from front to back) travel trunk. Made sometime in the 1890's. Most likely it was painted in a two tone (recessed one color, raised pattern another) paint job, or entirely in a tinted shellac, and gold was the most popular color. You may see evidence of the color on the top edge of the bottom when the trunk is open. Hope ths helps,
Jim

Check your latched on the trunk there should be a date
Great trunk!!, love the hardware, love the lock, looks like you have an overbite on the left side maybe from a broken hinge on the back just guessing but over all looks to be in great shape. Would look really nice refinished, agree with Jim on date 1890's . Not sure what your saying Bama69, I don't think there's a visible date on that latch, and no disrespect but dated hardware is not an indication of when a trunk was made, hardware patented in 1880 was used for 30 or 40 years, but anyway, love the trunk great find.
Nice trunk! There is a patent date on the lock around the keyhole (not usually called a latch). But greendog is correct, it helps narrow it down but most of the hardware was used for many years after the patent date.
i have the same trunk, picked it up about 15 yrs ago. the pattern on the tin is known as "grecian with dots". it is done from the reverse (back) side so that it is raised. dont worry, mine has a broken hinge too. date(?) made around 1890's between 1870-1910 keep in mind variations occur ie: the medalians on your lid are different from mine due to surplus parts being used. mine resemble a large 4 petal flower.
